The foundation dates back to the millennium before 3000 BC.

In the early ages this region was called Karia because the Karia were settled. History of the province begins with the Hittites. The Hittites joined this area with Lugga. The Hittites joined this area with Lugga. After the disintegration of the empire, the Phrygians became dominant, later the Lydians captured the region, while the Dords and Ions migrated to the locality. In 133, the Roman Empire became divided under the rule of the Eastern Roman Empire. The passing of the Turks took place in 1284 by Menteshe Bey. At the end of 1391, the Ottoman Sultan Yildirim Beyazit added Mugla to his lands. There are various rumors about where the name “Muğla” comes from. According to the most common saying, the name of the province comes from the commander of the Seljuk Sultan Kılıçarslan “Muğlu” Bey. Most probably Muğlu Bey was given the name of this commander for his conquest, and “Muğlu” turned into Muğla in time. 1889 The name “Mobella” found in the townships of Aydın Province is the name of the city in the middle ages.

During the war of independence, Italy, which began the invasion of Mugla and its province on May 11, 1919, had to negotiate and negotiate with the national forces sprouting in the south of Menderes.

Italy could not see a military conflict in front of the national resistance studies that Yörük Ali Efe directed from Muğla and Demirci Mehmet Efe directed from Nazilli. Upon the occupation, all the Anatolian rallies were organized and the telegrams coming from İzmir for the establishment of the resistance organizations responded by organizing the Muğla Kocahan Mitingi. Following the decisions taken, resistance committees such as Vatan Müdafaa Cemiyeti, Serdengeçtiler Müfrezesi, Muğla Kuvayi Milliyesi were established. Muğlalı, who in the first term of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey opened in Ankara in 1920 with 6 MPs, has fallen victim to the national struggle. He sent the hearts of the resistance groups that he formed to the Aydın ceasefire against the Greeks. In the Aegean, the volunteers who united with the rest of the people gave heavy losses to the enemy in the Aydın conflicts.

Among the Aegean provinces, Muğla was the province most martyred during the occupation. Mugla people have cunningly assessed Italian politics based on the idea of economic domination in the Greeks and occupied territories, while the internal situation was complicated. Italy, who realized that the situation in Anatolia had deteriorated, left the country on 5 July 1921 after claiming the internal political fluctuations in his country after winning the 2nd İnönü Victory. Muğla thus regained his freedom.

Muğla’s central city is famous for the houses where the Greeks live. After the War of Independence, the Greeks living in Muğla and the Turks living in Balkans and Greece made a deportation. These houses, with their unique architecture, are of high historical value and protected.
